Forums and Blogs
Collectors Universe Forums – This site has several discussion boards, but the US Coin and Sports Card forums are the most active. PCGS is considered the best third party coin grading service and the forum attracts a number of experts who are generally happy to help new collectors.
NGC – Collector’s Society Forums – This forum is much like the Collector’s Universe forums in that there are active coin and sports card forums. The forums are better moderated and are free of overt political discussions and nastiness that is sometimes seen on the Collector’s Universe forums. And since NCG is a top tier third party grading service, it is frequented by a number of experts.
CoinTalk – A well monitored forum that is not associated with any third party grading service. While there are a a number top experts who are active on this site, it’s primarily a collectors board.
Clubs and Organizations
American Numismatic Association – All serious coin collectors should consider membership in the ANA. Membership includes a subscription to The Numismatist, a monthly magazine that features a number expert contributors. Members also have access to the ANA library and books can be checked out for the cost of Priority Mail.
Early American Coppers – As the name indicates, this group consists of aficionados of early American copper coins, from early Colonials, Half Cents, Large Cents, and Hard Time Tokens. They publish a quarterly magazine, Penny-Wise. Their grading standard for coppers is respected enough the some auction houses will offer the EAC grade for a coin, along side the 3rd party grade.
